Sciatica is a common complaint treated successfully at Cannock Osteopaths on a daily basis. It refers to symptoms caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve as it radiates from the lower back, through the buttock and down the leg. The sciatic nerve is made up from 5 nerve roots that exit the lower back. Symptoms of sciatica include pain, pins and needles, weakness and numbness with the intensity of symptoms and distribution down the leg and into the foot varying greatly from person to person. Low back pain may also be present. Sciatica usually will only affect one leg, but on some occasions can affect both.

There are a number of different conditions that can cause sciatica. Common causes can include disc bulges, degenerative changes in the joints of the low back, spinal stenosis or piriformis syndrome. All the Osteopaths at Cannock Osteopaths are highly trained and skilled in diagnosing these causes to help decide on the most appropriate course of treatment for you, or whether further investigation is required.

We are able to refer for private MRI scanning if required in severe cases. Heath Lodge Clinic in Solihull currently charges £245 for a one area scan eg. the lumbar spine.

Osteopathy can be highly effective at relieving the symptoms of sciatica by gentle osteopathic techniques designed to relax tight muscles and improve joint mobility, along with advice on ice packs to decrease inflammation and strapping. Advice on posture and suitable exercises to aid recovery and prevent recurrence will also be discussed.

Recovery time varies depending on the underlying cause and length of time symptoms have been present.

Sciatica is one of the most debilitating conditions we treat at Cannock Osteopaths. The earlier it is investigated, diagnosed and treatment started the quicker you will recover.
